Longfellows „Evangeline“ wird im Abschnitt „Introduction“ auch das verwendete Versma\u00df erkl\u00e4rt; auf durchaus ansprechende und nachvollziehbare Art, weswegen ich diese Erk\u00e4rung des Hexameters hier, im Text leicht und in den Beispielen stark gek\u00fcrzt, vorstellen m\u00f6chte (sie findet sich auf den Seiten xlvii – li) – ein Blick aus einem leicht anderen Winkel ist immer hilfreich!<\/p>\n
„The metre in which ‚Evangeline‘ is written is called dactylic hexameter. Each verse contains six feet (hence the name hexameter). In the normal verse each foot except the last consists of an accented followed by two unaccented syllables (dactyl). The last foot has one accented and one unaccented syllable (trochee).<\/p>\n
This<\/strong> is the \/ for<\/strong>est pri- \/ me<\/strong>val. The \/ mur<\/strong>muring \/ pines<\/strong> and the \/ hem<\/strong>locks<\/p>\n As a succession of perfectly regular verses would prove monotonous, substitutions are frequently made, usually a trochee for a daktyl.<\/p>\n Waste<\/strong> are those \/ plea<\/strong>sant<\/em> \/ farms<\/strong>, and the \/ far<\/strong>mers for- \/ e<\/strong>ver de- \/ par<\/strong>ted.<\/p>\n A trochee is not often found in the fifth foot. Frequently a verse contains more than one substituted foot:<\/p>\n Stand<\/strong> like \/ har<\/strong>pers \/ hoar<\/strong>, with \/ bears<\/strong> that \/<\/em> rest<\/strong> on their \/ bo<\/strong>soms.<\/p>\n Monotony is further relieved by varying the position of the pauses. Obviously, pauses must be made in so long a verse, and their occurence in any fixed place would give the reader an unpleasant jolt. The rhythmical pause may or may not be indicated by puctation.<\/p>\n There<\/strong> dis- \/ or<\/strong>der pre- \/ vailed<\/strong>, ||<\/span> and the \/ tu<\/strong>mult and \/ stir<\/strong> of em- \/ bar<\/strong>king.<\/p>\n It will be noticed that the linking of verses together has much to do with oral reading. Verse structure and sentence structure may correspond: In such a case the sentence is usually a topic sentence. But as a rule the sentence is carried on from one verse to another, and this necessitates pauses of varying length at the end of the lines.“<\/p>\n Das liest sich doch sehr hilfreich?! Dar\u00fcber, dass eine der „Pausen“, die in der Versmitte, etwas wichtiger ist als die restlichen, h\u00e4tte man noch ein Wort verlieren k\u00f6nnen, aber gut: muss man nicht. Erst recht nicht angesichts der n\u00e4chsten S\u00e4tze:<\/p>\n „The scansion of the line offers few difficulties. In general, a safe rule to follow is, accent the first syllable and the rest will take care of itself.“<\/p>\n So einfach ist das also … Entweder ist das Englische doch geeigneter f\u00fcr Hexameter, als immer gedacht; oder Longfellow war ein Versk\u00fcnstler erster G\u00fcte.
